Today, an event dedicated to "June 17 - World Day of Combating Drought and Desertification" was held at the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The event was opened by the director general of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS, professor Alovsat Guliyev. In his speech, the scientist said that, June 17 - the World Day of Combating Drought and Desertification - is the day of desertification, a global environmental and socio-economic problem. Climate change is now an undeniable reality in front of all countries. At the event, an employee of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, senior adviser of the department of international cooperation and climate change -Avazova Matanat, "Platform on Climate Change of the Republic of Azerbaijan", Director of the Climate Change Center - Sevinj Ahmadova, "The main sources that change the climate", Senior specialist of the Climate Change Center - Roya Efendiyeva gave a speech on "The Impact of Climate Change on Desertification and Drought". After the lectures, questions of interest to the employees of the Institute were answered at the event, which continued with debates.
It should be noted that, the Convention on combating desertification signed by 170 countries has been in force since 1994. The "World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification" celebrated on June 17 was announced by the UN General Assembly in 1994.
