From January 31, 1969 (Protocol №. 6), by the decision of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, the Laboratory of Soil Mineralogy and Chemistry of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR acted as a group. Iskanderov Iskender Shahbala oglu was in charge.

In 1975, the chemical laboratory operating at the institute was abolished, and a chemical-mineralogical laboratory was created, the laboratory was headed by Doctor of Science Iskenderov Iskender Shahbala oglu was introduced to the leadership. Under his leadership, the study of mineralogy, chemistry and diagnostics of silt fractions of soils of the Kura-Araks lowland began.

In 1995, at the attestation commission held at the institute, the head of the laboratory was appointed agricultural director. Assoc. Huseyn Jalal oglu Mehdiyev.

The main directions of the laboratory:-

-Study of silty fractions of the main soils of Azerbaijan

-Determining the features of the distribution of minerals depending on the mineralogical mining of silt fractions and establishing patterns of distribution and mapping on a scale of 1: 1500,000.

- In addition to silty fractions, the mineralogical composition of the soil is determined by various methods on German-made MINI FLEX-600 devices with modern equipment.

-Using non-traditional soil minerals, zeolite, serpentine, perlite and  bentonite clay from rocks are widely used to improve soil fertility.

- Depending on the pattern of distribution, it is possible not only to estimate the amount of potassium and phosphorus, but also to determine the pattern of distribution of calcium and magnesium and use them on various soils of the republic.

Currently, bentonite clay, extracted from the territory of the village of  Guzdak of the Absheron Peninsula, is used in gray-brown soils of the Absheron Regional Agricultural Institute and has the ability to enhance both agro physical and agrochemical properties of the soil itself. It also has a positive effect on the growth and development of the corn plant.

- In the future, a positive effect on the properties and structure of soils will lead to an increase in their productivity and a weakening of the use of mineral fertilizers.
