According to forecasts of UN experts, at the end of the 21st century, humanity will face an environmental disaster related to water scarcity. People living in certain regions of the Earth, they will have to fight for solving the problems of water and land degradation. In order to solve these problems at least partially, our rivers, which are the source of drinking water of our country, chemical pollution, repeated salinization and other effects must be protected. The Kahriz, which have been in use for many years, should be handed over to future generations in working condition.
The director general of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Science and Education, Corresponding member of ANAS, professor Alovsat Guliyev said this, in an interview with AZERTAC. He noted that, until the beginning of the 20th century, the water supply of cities and more than 200 rural settlements was provided only by the Kahriz water system. Azerbaijan has the opportunity to obtain an average of 300-350 million cubic meters of clean and high-quality water every year through the Kahriz. Azerbaijan (except Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), 332 out of 623 kahriz officially registered were in the occupied territories. Thankfully, they were also liberated from the occupation. Thus, we had the opportunity to obtain 300-350 million cubic meters of clean and high-quality Kahriz water on average every year. The professor said that, the reservoirs in Aghdam district have a capacity of 64.33 million cubic meters, 34.68 million cubic meters in Jabrayl, and 19.01 million cubic meters in Fuzuli per year.
He noted that, research has been started on these unique water sources liberated from occupation. In short, Karabakh Kahriz water system culture is studied. Alovsat Guliyev recalled that, in August 2002, at the meeting held in Nakhchivan city regarding the construction of the Vaikhir reservoir, the National Leader Heydar Aliyev expressed the importance of restoration and protection of the kahriz. In accordance with the recommendations of the Great Leader, in 2004, under the State Reclamation and Water Management Committee of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Department of Kahriz Water system was established, and more than 300 dams have been restored to date.
